Exploring Scenic Bike Routes – Coastal Edition

As an avid mountain biker, one of my favourite things about living in Ireland is the abundance of stunning coastal routes at my disposal. Today, I’ll share a few of my personal favourites.

The Waterford Greenway

The Waterford Greenway bike route is a fantastic place to start. It spans 46km from Waterford City to Dungarvan. Along the way, you’ll bike through an enchanting tunnel, over viaducts, and past the Comeragh Mountains. The route ends at the Celtic Sea, offering breathtaking views.

The Great Western Greenway

The Great Western Greenway is another must-try. As Ireland’s longest off-road cycling trail, it spans 42km from Westport to Achill. You’ll ride through picturesque towns, past stunning beaches, and over rolling hills. And the views of Clew Bay and the Nephin Beg mountain range are simply out of this world.

The Causeway Coastal Route

If you’re up for a challenge, the Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland is tough but rewarding. It stretches 200km from Belfast to Derry. Along the way, you’ll pass the iconic Giant’s Causeway, cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and bike the dramatic cliffs of the Antrim Coast.

The Boyne Valley Route

Next on the list is the Boyne Valley Route. This trail, stretching over 62km, offers a rich historical experience as it takes you past some of Ireland’s most famous ancient sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Brú na Bóinne and the historic town of Drogheda. The route, largely off-road, allows you to soak in the scenic beauty of the countryside while indulging in a bit of history.

The Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry, one of Ireland’s most popular tourist trails, offers an equally captivating experience for bikers. With a length of about 179km, this circular route takes you through some of Kerry’s most spectacular landscapes, including Killarney National Park, the Torc Waterfall, and the Lakes of Killarney. The rugged coastal scenery coupled with charming small towns along the way make this a must-ride route.

The Wild Atlantic Way

Finally, for those looking for a long-haul adventure, there’s the Wild Atlantic Way. As the world’s longest-defined coastal touring route, it stretches over 2,500km along Ireland’s west coast. It offers a diverse range of scenery from the stunning Cliffs of Moher in County Clare to the remote wilderness of Connemara in County Galway. It’s a challenging ride, but the breathtaking views and the sense of achievement make it all worthwhile.

Remember, no matter which route you choose, respect the local communities, protect the natural environment, and always prioritise safety. Happy biking!
